What is the RIA group about?

The RIA or Rich Internet Application development user group is an Adobe certified user group that meets monthly to teach learners about the latest technology development tools and practices for programming RIA applications. We have a great event scheduled at UTSA on Friday 17 September 2010! It is going to be a great networking opportunity so save the date.

What is the format of this meeting?

This is not an info session. It is a special training event that is similar to an online video tutorial with the benefit of having a live presenter actively develop the project with you. This means that at the end of each training session, you will have executable code and experience the author’s workflow in creating the application.

We will dive very deeply in to the areas of ActionScript 3, OOP (Object Oriented Programming), Design Patterns, Pure MVC, Component Development and much more.

What programming technology will be covered?

We will cover Flash, Flex, and AIR along with other RIA languages such as Javascript, PHP, Ruby, Java, etc.

Why are we offering this for free?

We are trying to broaden and invigorate the developer community in San Antonio to help the city flourish in the software development industry.

Meeting for May 17, 2010 – How Xuggler Will Rock Your World!

It’s been a long time fellow developers but were back this month with a topic near and dear to all of us at my development shop; Xuggler.

Because technology is a saturated market it is rare to come across a technology that can be a game changer. However Xuggler has the capacity to do just that. Xuggler (http://www.xuggle.com/) is a LGPL Java project that utilizes FFMPEG to do real time audio/video decoding/encoding. Sounds commonplace right? Well Xuggler’s unique approach to decoding/encoding not only makes working with FFMPEG and its quirks SO MUCH EASIER it allows the developer to leverage the packets (chunks of data being passed around) in ways previously thought impossible (or just to hard).

At this meeting I’ll give an introduction into Xuggler, how we’ve used their libraries in our own projects (we’ve even developed our own LGPL library inspired by their technology https://code.google.com/p/packet-multibroadcaster/), how we plan to utilize them in the future, and we’ll get started developing several sample apps that may change the way you look at video!

Last time we worked on some problems that our members have been having in their own business domains (managing a CMS and setting up a rich playlist/sequencing system).

If any member has a problem related to their everyday business we would be glad to tackle it as a practical example which is always more adept at instruction than a sample application that I would come up with.

This month were going to work on and maybe finish up the problems that we began last month and add to that any other problems members want to bring up.

Otherwise, we’ll work on applying our pending OOP playlist to our player application via XML.

Last time we finished up most of the functionality for our playlist so this time were going to use that functionality to apply our OOP playlist system to several applications.

This is going to show how to better re-use our code (that is making it more decoupled from the UI/implementation) and give our members a better idea of how something like that could be useful.

On another note, this is our final meeting before the new year and as such were giving away PRIZES similar to the other usergroups you’ll find around town.

Last time we began mocking out an indexed playlist application for one of our members.

This time were going to finish up the testing our playlist and begin to integrate it with our video player; leading us further down the path of a completed video player application. We’re really making some progress and will hopefully have a fully testable application soon!

Last time we:

Finished up some required refactoring
Completed the scaffolding/structure of the playlist for our video player
Tested the usability of our framework

This time were going to finish up the testing our our playlist and begin to integrate it with our video player; leading us further down the path of a completed video player application.

Beginning a new project can be overwhelming particularly if the project scope is extensive. In order to ease the difficulty with starting a project and some requests from our members we have begun a project that were going to use to not only show how me and my team approach larger applications but also learn some ActionScript.

Those who were here last month know that we have finished:

Listing out the feature set that we want for our application
Mocking out the basic functionality for our playlist
Coded the basic framework for our playlist.
Have begun implementation of our playlist with some test data.

This next meeting we will continue coding the playlist section of the application as well as the rest of the application. Just like last and every time don’t get too comfortable because we will be mixing coding with designing sessions during our time.

Now that the group is done with the absolute basics of ActionScript (although review will be provided as we progress) it’s time to jump into our first group project!

In order to make this applicable to real world development, we will be making a real-world application that we decide as a group.

Come prepared to interact, design, help code, and be interactive as this project will be great way for the group to get hands on flash development experience!

Here is the code and designs that we created for the meeting (as always please download then rename the extension to 7z or zip).
